The inner conversation

Reflect.

Observe · write · question · understand

We do not live our lives so much as we tell ourselves stories about them. Reflection is the slow, honest work of noticing which story we are telling — and whether it is still true.

01

Watching without fixing

Most of the time we react. Something happens, and we respond before we have understood. Reflection is the pause between — the willingness to watch a feeling without immediately trying to fix it, name it, post about it or explain it away.

02

The question that changes everything

Instead of asking “why is this happening to me”, try asking “what is this asking of me”. The first question keeps you a victim of your life. The second turns your life into a teacher. Both are honest. Only one is useful.

03

Writing the truth down

Some thoughts only reveal themselves when you write them. There is something about the slow speed of a pen that lets the deeper mind catch up. If a truth is hiding from you, do not think about it. Write to it. It usually comes.

A small practice

A small reflective practice to try this week

  1. 01Pick one recurring feeling — restlessness, guilt, fatigue, anger.
  2. 02Sit down with paper for ten minutes.
  3. 03Ask it: what are you trying to tell me?
  4. 04Write whatever comes. Do not edit. Do not share. Then close the book.

The mind cannot hear itself over its own noise. Reflection is simply the willingness to make the noise quieter.
